Overview (U):

(U) The Ground-based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance (GEODSS) sensor site located at Socorro provides surveillance of objects in deep space. The site is equipped with Telescope Mount Groups (TMG) designed and built in the late seventies. No major refurbishment has been accomplished on the TMG since they were installed. In 1996, the government conducted a survey to determine the condition of these assets and non-operational assets at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) and in storage at the Sacramento ALC. It is the Government's objective to refurbish and repair all GEODSS main and auxiliary telescopes to like-new condition and original performance specifications.

Description (U):

(U) The intention of the GEODSS Telescope and Mount Group (TMG) Refurbishment program is to provide a systematic refurbishment of the GEODSS telescope assets. The effort involved in this program would include a teardown of each site's Telescope Mount Groups, transfer to the contractor facility for refurbishment, and installation, test and checkout of the TMG's at the site following the refurbishment effort. The goal of this program is to add in excess of 15 additional years of reliable service to the GEODSS TMG's, while minimizing operational impact at the site.

User Impact (U):

(U) Any sustained loss of a GEODSS sensor would have dramatic impact on the deep space surveillance mission and maintenance of the space catalogue.
