-Description |
Overview (U):(U) The Solar Wind Interplanetary Magnetic Field Monitor and Energy Particle Real-time (SWIMER) is a proposed mission, designed as a real-time monitor of Space Weather for both DoD and civilian users. Based on the proven Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) design and incorporating improved NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous technology, the SWIMER spacecraft will provide a follow-on to the ACE realtime monitor through NOAA/SEC (Space Environment Center) with an enormous cost savings over the more comprehensive ACE mission. Like ACE, SWIMER will be be located at the L1 libration point, ~1.5 x 106 km upstream from earth where uninterrupted geospace environment data will provide 1 hour to >1 day alerts. SWIMER will be in a halo orbit with an approximately 10?x10? ellipse as viewed from Earth. With a planned lifetime of 3 to 5 years, SWIMER will be in place through the next maximum in the solar cycle. |
