-Description |
Overview (U):(U) GEOSTORMS is a joint program effort by NOAA, the USAF, possibly other federal agencies, and commercial customers to acquire solar wind observations, which provide alerts of geomagnetic storms. Currently, solar wind observations are cooperatively supplied from two NASA research missions: WIND and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). |
(U) To improve the warning lead time of geomagnetic storms, NOAA will establish a Rapid Prototyping Platform and perform studies of data available from NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) in an L1 orbit. The Rapid Prototyping Platforms are a vehicle to objectively examine competing methodologies for developing new forecast products, while the studies of ACE data are to validate the low cost smallsat approach to GEOSTORMS. The U. S. Air Force endorses these activities and is attempting to strengthen their participation in the SEL program.
(U) NOAA is attempting to significantly improve short-term warning and forecast products and services for a broad spectrum of environmental events, including tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, and geomagnetic storms by the year 2002.
