-Description |
Overview (U):(U) The Defense Support Program and Nuclear Detonation (NUDET) Detection System (NDS) consists of two sensor packages for the detection, location, and data transmittal of nuclear detonation and space background radiation information to units located at the CONUS Ground Station (CGS) and the Overseas Ground Station (OGS). The DSP/NDS system is designed to support nuclear force management, integrated tactical warning and attack assessment, and test ban treaty monitoring. The system includes space based sensors and ground mission processing systems. NDS payloads are also hosted on the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation satellites. This description discusses the NDS portion of the DSP system. |
(U) The DSP/NDS consists of two sensor packages for the detection and location of endo- and exo-atmospheric NUDETs: the Advanced RADEC (Radiation Detection Capability) I and Advanced RADEC II. These packages consist of optical, x-ray, neutron, and gamma ray sensors to detect endo-atmospheric, near earth exo-atmospheric, and deep space exo-atmospheric nuclear events and to monitor background radiation in space.
(U) DSP/NDS provides endo- and exo-atmospheric nuclear detonation detection and space background radiation information.
