Overview (U):

(U) The SHF Tri-Band Advanced Range-Extension Terminal (STAR-T) provides the Army with a HMMWV mounted, C-130 Roll-on/Roll-off, SHF multi-channel Tactical Satellite Terminal (TACSAT). The terminal operates over both commercial and military SHF satellites and has joint Service applicability. It also incorporates DAMA and Control and Monitoring System (DACMS) features for Special Operations Forces (SOF) support.


Description (U):

(U) AN/TSC-156 STAR-T is a HMMWV-mounted tri-band satellite terminal which can operate in conjunction with virtually any commercial or military satellite in the C, X, and Ku-Bands. STAR-T contains both a TRI-TAC/MSE-compatible communications switch. TriSat replaces the current truck mounted X-Band ground terminals and supplements existing switching equipment. An on-board TD-1337 TSSP ensures compatibility with existing AN/TSC-95B/93B Ground Mobile Forces (GMF) terminals. STAR-T also provides baseband switching for both DTGs and local voice and packet subscribers.

(U) There will be two versions of STAR-T: a standard version and a switch version. The switch version will have an integrated lightweight commercial switch capable of tactical interface. The standard version will not have an embedded switch, however, it will be configured to allow the switch to be carried if necessary. The Army plans on procuring 71 standard STAR-Ts with no circuit switches and 82 STAR-Ts with switches. STAR-T will replace all AN/TSC-93B/85B satellite communications terminals and provide TROJAN SPIRIT II communications functions at Echelons Above Corps.

(U) STAR-T will have a maximum set-up and tear-down time of 30 minutes with three personnel. The system is considered set-up when the terminal is ready to process traffic and torn-down when it is ready for deployment.
