(U) The Naval Satellite Operations Center (NAVSOC), headquartered in Point Mugu, California, is a component command of the Naval Space Command (NAVSPACECOM).

(U) The Command was originally established as the Navy Astronautics Group in 1962 to operate the Navy Navigation Satellite System, commonly known as TRANSIT. The Command operates remote satellite ground control stations in Prospect Harbor, Maine; Laguna Peak, California; and Finegayan, Guam. In addition, NAVSOC uses a state-of-the-art distributed mission control system to maintain telemetry, tracking, and control (TT&C) on operational and scientific satellites, such as: all FLTSATCOM satellites, Geodetic Satellite Follow-on (GFO - launch in 1997), and Navy Ionospheric Monitoring System (NIMS) satellite constellation. NAVSOC also provides on-orbit technical and engineering support in conjunction with spacecraft operations.

(U) New satellites can be added to the NAVSOC's distributed system through software modifications, eliminating the costly stovepipe approach of more traditional satellite control systems. FLTSATCOM, Polar EHF, and GFO will be added when they are launched in 1997. TT&C for FLTSATCOM UHF Follow-on (UFO) including GBS will be added in 1999.
